MICROFILM MINISTRY

Much of the history of a church and its people is recorded on the pages of  Lyon Chapel, University of Mobile
church records. Regardless of congregation size or denomination, every
church should preserve its historical documents in the best possible way--
microfilming these valuable records.

The Alabama Baptist Historical Commission in cooperation with the
Samford University Library provides a simple and efficient microfilm
procedure without charge to the church.

Microfilming ensures that a copy of the church records will be available if the
originals are ever destroyed by fire, flood, wind, or time.

Marker at Belleville Baptist ChurchMicrofilming provides a copy of church records for research
purposes. Continued use of fragile old records eventually makes
                                                                    them impossible to use.

The microfilming is done at the Samford University Library
Microfilm Department, a certified microfilm laboratory. The staff is
and experienced in handling historical documents. The filming
process requires approximately six weeks. The church is notified
when the originals are ready to be returned.

Some churches choose to entrust their original records to the Alabama Baptist Historical Collection for custody in the Special Collection. This can be arranged by contacting Elizabeth Wells, Special Collection Coordinator, at 205-726-2749.

The church records can be brought daily to the Special Collection
Department, Samford University Library, Monday through Friday,
8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please note that the hours may vary with
academic calendar.

If a personal visit is not possible, other arrangements can be made
through the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission by calling
1-800-325-9863.
