The Alabama Baptist Historical Commission Writing Awards
Thomas Shumaker Award

Thomas Shumaker Historical Research and Writing Award - The ABHC is pleased to announce the Thomas Shumaker Historical Research and Writing Award. The purpose of this award is to foster interest in Alabama Baptist history among college undergraduates. The award is named in honor of Thomas Shumaker, a former ABHC Commissioner. Mr. Shumaker passed away in January 2003. A member of the First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa, he had a great love for Alabama Baptists and their rich history.

Eligibility:

  • Any undergraduate college student is eligible, including December 2004, 
    May 2005 and August 2005 graduates.

Criteria:

  • Papers may deal with a church, an association or an individual at the local 
    or state level in relation to Alabama Baptist history. Papers are to written in 
    Chicago style, double spaced, and should be 15-20 pages in length. There 
    is not a minimum requirement for resources, but must include primary 
    resources which can include church records, associational records and local 
    newspapers. If interviews are conducted, the audio tape must be submitted 
    with the paper.

Award:

  • First Prize: $500
  • Second Prize: $300
  • Third Prize: $100
  • Recognition at the Alabama Baptist State Convention in November 2003
  • Submission to The Alabama Baptist Historian for possible publication

Submission

  • Papers should be submitted to the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission office by mail at P.O. Box 292286, Birmingham, AL 35229-2286, or you can submit your paper in person at our office, at 216 North Divinity Hall, 800 Lakeshore Drive, Birmingham, AL 35229 (on the campus of Samford University). Though if you wish to submit your paper in-person, it would be best to call first to ensure it can be received (1-800-325-9863 or locally at 205-726-2363).
